Hillwood and Ericsson Routes Partner on ‘Connectivity Predictions’ at the MIZ

Dallas-based Hillwood is partnering with Ericsson Routes to ensure wireless 4G/5G connectivity for autonomous vehicles and drones in the MIZ at AllianceTexas.

Planning and operations in the Mobility Innovation Zone require a consistent and reliable connection throughout the whole journey of each tested vehicle—whether it’s a self-driving truck or a delivery drone dropping test packages. Ericsson Routes, an incubation unit within Ericsson, offers Waze-like connectivity predictions for planned routes and journeys.

“Partnering with Ericsson Routes and their technology leadership gives our customers world-class and cutting-edge services that will advance the mobility industry,” Hillwood EVP Russell Laughlin said in a statement. “This unique technology offers mobility leaders an opportunity to be at the forefront of ensuring their products have the connectivity they need to operate now and well into the future.”

Less than three years since its launch, the  MIZ has become a leading global destination for companies advancing next-generation supply chain technologies. You can check out Dallas Innovates stories about many of them, including Wing, Bell, TuSimple, Gatik, and more.

Ericsson Routes has an ‘uplink blind spot detector’

Ericsson Routes launched earlier this year in San Francisco, providing “a single integration point and a consistent prediction engine for autonomous vehicles across all their wireless service providers.” The service predicts secure connectivity from point A to point B for a journey by using its uplink blind spot detector. Ericsson Routes’ planning capabilities also help fleet managers address connectivity issues when they’re considering new areas to deploy in, the company says.

Partnering for drone connectivity, too

Now at the MIZ, Ericsson Routes will be available to current and future mobility companies operating there. In addition, in partnership with Hillwood, Ericsson Routes will test and expand support for drone connectivity later this year.
